AREA 38 Presents - DJ MUGGS (Cypress Hill) vs GZA/GENIUS  (Wu Tang Clan)

Supported by Self Scientific, Killah Priest (Wu Tang Clan) , DJ Solo (Soul Assassins), DJ Def Rok (SYD), Infallible (MELB)

‘GRANDMASTERS Tour 2006’

DJ Muggs and GZA/GENIUS bring their sonic force to Australia in May to promote their critically acclaimed ‘Grandmasters’ release. Joining them will be underground legends Self Scientific, DJ Solo (Soul Assassins) and local turntablist DJ Def Rok (SYD). This is a line up to make any self respecting hip hop fiend’s mouth water. AREA 38 have put together a group of artists who are guaranteed to bring a neck-snapping onslaught to the audiences of Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

No one who has a passion for hip hop is unaffected by these two colossal talents: they have been providing the soundtrack to the lives of many people for years. Muggs’ eerie and heavy bass driven beats for Cypress Hill are legendary, while the GZA is widely regarded as the most lyrically gifted of the Wu Tang Clan – a collective responsible for the hip hop education of millions.

This will be a live collaboration performance that combines the sounds of two of the biggest groups in hip hop history, a show that includes both new and old school. In addition to playing their Grandmasters material, Muggs will be slashing up a
Cypress Hill set on the decks, and GZA will also be performing Wu Tang hits and spitting lyrics from his solo LP’s.

Together they have released an album that draws its inspiration and driving force from the game of chess. Those who become experts in the game of chess are known as Grandmasters, and it is from this term that Muggs and GZA take the title of their album, and their upcoming tour.

The ‘Grandmasters’ album is a “dark masterpiece” according to The Source, full of “exceptional detail and precision” with GZA is at his lyrical best, and Muggs creating an “epic aural landscape” that takes you by the throat and won’t let go.

Joining the Grandmasters on the bill is underground duo, Self Scientific. Chace Infinite and DJ Khalil have received high praise from many well respected sources: JIVE Magazine gave their album, ‘Change’ 5 out of 5.

Okayplayer.com heaped praise on the duo, describing them as “intelligent brothers making smart beats”, whose album “is simply great.” AllHipHop.com singled out Khalil for his “impressive production,” who, of late has been carefully looked after by Dr. Dre, at Aftermath Records.

The Source is equally effusive when it comes to the LA duo: “DJ Khalil and Chace Infinite give hip hop a much needed kick in the ass.” With those sort of props, you’d have to be crazy to miss this event.

Also included in the line up is DJ Solo, Soul Assassins remix maestro. Solo is label mate to the likes of DJ Muggs, Self Scientific, Mitchy Slick (Strong Arm Steady) and DJ Warrior on Angeles Records.

So Protect Ya Neck: the Grandmasters behind Wu Tang Clan and Cypress Hill bring their own Temple of Boom to town in May. If you like your hip hop hard and heavy you better wake up; this promises to be a once in a life time event without a moments rest between brilliance.
